This small sea chest is inspired by a a sailor-made chest from the nineteenth century. It incorporates many design elements found in period sea chests. The front and back are canted and assembled with hand cut dovetail joinery. The top is supported by wrought iron strap hinges and the end cleats are connected with mortise and tenon joints. It has an ivory heart inlay centered on the front and a contrasting star inlay on the interior lid. The optional handles are copied from the description of the one's found on Capt. Tom Crosby's ditty box in the book, ”The Marlinespike Sailor”, by Hervey Garrett Smith.

Cut dovetail joints, 1/2 machine & 1/2 by hand.
Miter and install moldings.
Biscuit joint cleats to the top.
Make grommet cleats.
Weave rope grommets.
Install iron strap hinges.
If time permits you will make and install a faux ivory heart inlay and an interior star inlay. Length 16-1/2; depth 10"; height 7-1/4'.
